ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team suffered defeat in their season opener on Friday as they fell to Webster University 81-53 on the opening day of the Webster Tipoff Classic.
It was a tough night offensively for the Blazers from the start and Belhaven was only able to put up 11 points at the end of the first quarter, trailing by seven. The scoring gap was only furthered in the second quarter as Webster held Belhaven to eight points while tallying 25 and opening up a 43-19 lead.
The third quarter followed similar script, with Webster outscoring the Blazers 27-9 and set up a deficit that Belhaven could not overcome despite outscoring the hosts 25-11 in the final frame. As a team, Belhaven shot just 31.5% from the field and 18.8% from beyond the arc.
Belhaven ended the night with one player in double-figures as
Calise Jackson posted 11 points in her Belhaven debut while also tallying three steals, a block and two rebounds.
Hayle Poindexter led the charge on the boards pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.
Belhaven will look to bounce back on Saturday as they take on the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 1:00 PM in their final game at the Webster Tipoff Classic.Â
