Blazers Outlast Maryville to Advance to CCS Men's Soccer Final

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team punched their ticket to the Collegiate Conference of the South Men's Soccer Championship Final on Saturday as they outlasted Maryville, 3-2, in a back-and-forth thriller.

Belhaven held a slight edge in the opening minutes of the first half although neither team created much by way of attacking chances as the match crossed the half hour mark. However, the first fireworks of the match would start in the 37th minute as Belhaven was whistled for a foul in their own penalty area and Maryville converted from the spot to take a 1-0 lead.

It seemed the Scots would lead at the break but Carl Koppeis would add to the first half drama as he broke into the box and fired past the goalkeeper at the near post with just six seconds remaining in the half to level the score at the break.

Just on the other side of halftime, Belhaven would take their first lead in the match as Courtland Williams created space with a smooth turn and fired across goal for his fifth tally in four matches. The Blazers had an opportunity to add to their tally shortly after with Williams earning a penalty after being fould in the Maryville box but Belhaven was unable to convert from the spot.

Maryville would take advantage of only trailing by a goal and bring the match back level in the 70th minute and seemingly set the teams up to head into extra time. Courtland Williams would prove the difference though as Koby Rhone played a perfect pass into the feet of the young striker for finished off his second goal of the match and gave Belhaven the 3-2 victory.

The Blazers now turn their attention to the CCS Championship Final where they will face top-seeded Covenant. Belhaven will face the Scots in Georgia on Saturday, November 4th with a time to be announced.
