Blazers Take Down Huntingdon in Five Set Thriller

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Volleyball team took down the Huntingdon Hawks in a nailbiting match that went to five sets.

In the opening set, Belhaven controlled the match early by jumping out ahead 13-7. The Blazers continued to showcase their dominance and pushed the tempo for the rest of the set as they took it 25-14. At the start of the second set, Belhaven started out slow, falling behind 8-2. As the match neared the end, the Blazers managed to scrap their way back into it and mount an impressive comeback as they cut the deficit to one. The Blazers comeback effort unfortunately fell short as the Hawks made one last push to take the set 25-21.

In set three, both teams traded points early, with no one gaining ahead. As the set reached the halfway mark, Belhaven pulled ahead to a 20-13 lead. Belhaven continued to control the pace offensively and would take the set in dominating fashion 25-18. In the fourth set, the Blazers began to struggle falling behind 7-3. Belhaven managed to fight back and cut the lead to four at the halfway mark. However, Huntingdon managed to pull ahead and take a 19-11 lead. Belhaven did not make it easy for the Hawks as they continuously chipped away at the lead. Despite their best efforts, Belhaven came up short 25-20.

At the beginning of the fifth set, the Blazers fell behind 7-2. Belhaven continued to battle with the Hawks and would go on to tie the set at 13. Belhaven made a huge push and took the set 15-13.

Several Blazers contributed in the kill department. Cailtin Torok led the way with 16 while Megan LaCour and Rylee Rylee White each added 13. Aniyah Tompkins continues to be a force in assists by once again leading the Blazers with 38. Belhaven was also sharp on defense with three Blazers having double digit digs. Aniyah Tompkins led Belhaven with 16, while Kayla Robinson and Emma Gardner chipped in 13 to add to the totals.

The Blazers will look to capitalize on October 21 as they travel to Berea, Kentucky to face Berea College and Agnes Scott in a CCS Tri-Match. Match time for game one is set at 11:00 AM. While match two is set for 1:00 PM.
