JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team fell 1-0 to Maryville at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Saturday in a matchup of the top two teams in the Collegiate Conference of the South standings.
The match was a tight one for the entirety of the 90 minutes and the opening half provided little in terms of scoring opportunities. Belhaven created a handful of chances in the first half including a couple of tight chances from corners that were repelled .
At the half, Belhaven and Maryville were scoreless with the visiting Scots only tallying one shot on target. The second half followed a similar script for the bulk of play although as the half wore on, Maryville was able to step up their pressure.Â
The Scots found a breakthrough with what would prove to be the match-winning goal in the 81st minute as a miss-hit cross sailed into the net. Despite the loss, Belhaven still sits atop the CCS standings on 18 points with a 6-1-0 record in conference play. Maryville has now pulled within in two points holding a 5-0-1 conference record.Â
Belhaven returns to action on Tuesday, October 17th as they travel to Columbus, Mississippi to take on MUW in non-conference play. Kickoff against the Owls is set for 6:00 PM.
