JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team secured their 10th win of the season in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as they took down rivals Millsaps, 2-1, thanks to a late penalty converted by
Kaci Craft.
The Blazers looked to be off to the races in the match as
Emma Antonoplos fired Belhaven in front just 12 minutes in with her fourth goal of the season. Following Antonoplos' finish though, Belhaven was unable to find a second despite dominating the chances.
At the end of the half, Belhaven held the slim 1-0 scoreline but an 11-4 edge in shot attempts and 5-1 edge in shots on target. The hosts found their footing in the second half and would equalize just past the hour mark against the run of play.
As the game began to wind down, Belhaven found the break they needed as Millsaps was whistled for a foul in the box and Belhaven was subsequently awarded a penalty.
Kaci Craft calmly converted from the spot for her team-leading ninth goal of the season
The win secures Belhaven a double-digit victory season for the third time in the past four full seasons (excluding the COVID-shortened Spring 2021 season) and pushes them to 10-2-1 overall. Despite being in non-conference action, Belhaven remains in firm control of the CCS standings with a 6-0-0 conference record.
The Blazers return to action on Saturday as they host Maryville College in conference play. Kickoff at the Bowl is set for 12:00 PM.
