LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - After a tough loss on Friday night the Belhaven Women's Basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday with a 78-49 win over Covenant College. The 29-point win marked the third highest margin of victory for the Blazers this season.
Belhaven was in control throughout the contest jumping out to an early lead in the first quarter. The Blazers were stout on both ends of the floor limiting the hosts to just 23.53% shooting from the field as Belhaven took a 19-12 lead to close the quarter.
The Blazers then stepped up their efforts in the second quarter of action, particularly on the defensive side of the ball as they held Covenant to just seven points in the period and took their 7-point lead out 18-points at the halftime break.
Covenant did well to try to trim the gap early in the third quarter but the Blazers' offense matched the Scots' outburst with Belhaven shooting nearly 50% from the floor as a team in the period. Belhaven took a 22-point lead into the fourth quarter and once again were stifling defensively as they kept Covenant in single-digits for the second time in the game.
Belhaven held Covenant to just 32.7% shooting from the field on the day and 27.8% shooting from beyond the arc. The Blazers also made the most of their transition opportunities forcing the Scots into 27 turnovers which led to 29 points for the Green & Gold. Belhaven also was dominant in second-chance opportunities outscoring Covenant 23-8 in second-chance points.
Shantashia John led all scorers on the day finishing with 22 points while also pulling down 7 rebounds and swiping 2 steals.
Xhiir Burgess tacked on 18 points of her own while grabbing a joint team-high 9 rebounds.
Ebony Gayden rounded out the Blazers in double-figures as she put up 13 points and snagged 9 rebounds.
The Blazers improved to 10-6 on the season with the win and are now 6-3 in conference play. Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday, January 25th when they travel to Columbus, Mississippi to take on MUW.
