COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball cruised to an away win on Wednesday as they took down Mississippi University for Women 68-40 in Columbus and improved to 11-6 on the season.
Belhaven got started early in the non-conference matchup as strong shooting immediately put the Blazers in the ascendency. With just over a minute to go in the first quarter Belhaven had pushed their lead out to 9 points and held a 19-14 advantage after the first period.
The Green and Gold continued to add to their lead in the second quarter with a balanced attack that saw them grab their first double-digit advantage. In the first six minutes of the second quarter the Blazers saw their lead grow from five points to a 20 point lead and never looked back from that point. In the quarter the Blazers outscored the Owls 20-3 showcasing dominance on both ends of the floor.
After leading 39-17 at the halftime interval the Blazers came out of the gates hot in the second half. Just a few minutes into the third quarter the Blazers saw their lead surpass the 30-point threshold and just over a minute into the fourth quarter grabbed their biggest lead of the game, a 39-point advantage. The hosts were able to reduce the deficit late on but Belhaven was able to win their 5th game this season with a scoring margin of over 20 points.
The Blazers were led on the day by
Shantashia John who finished with 16 points in just 18 minutes of action while
Ebony Gayden posted 13 points and 6 rebounds in the win.
Allaijah Gamble finished with 12 points while
Xhiir Burgess pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
Belhaven will look to build on back-to-back wins now as they host Maryville College on Saturday in CCS play and kick off a three-game homestand.
