Blazers Move Atop CCS Standings with 87-78 Win Over LaGrange

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team grabbed an impressive conference win over LaGrange on Saturday afternoon, 87-78, to push atop the Collegiate Conference of the South standings.

The game was a tight one despite the Blazers holding the lead for over 38 minutes in total. Both teams came out of the gates shooting the ball well from inside and outside the three point line. Belhaven started off quickly with a short 6-0 run out of the gate to take an early lead.

Leading 12-6 at the 14:47 mark Donovan Givens would hit the first three of the game for the Blazers that would spark the Belhaven attack from beyond the arc. Givens' three kicked off a stretch of possessions which resulted in four staight made three-point attempts and kept BU in front despite baskets on the other end by the visitors.

Despite the three point shooting clicking for Belhaven the home team made their mark in the paint through the game. A balanced attack continued to see a variety of Blazers get to the rim repeatedly helping BU out to a double-digit lead at the 3:51 mark.

Coming out of the half time break the Blazers held a 46-37 lead but it was one that Belhaven quickly saw evaporate as LaGrange came charging back. The Panthers briefly took the lead 51-50 at the 13:47 mark but Belhaven would regain control in short order and lead the rest of the way.

The final few minutes of the contest were closely contested with a theme of each team trying to make runs that were quickly quelled by the opposition. In the final minute it was Belhaven's strong free throw shooting that put the game out of reach as the Blazers moved to 8-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference action.

In the game the Blazers shot a strong 65.3% from the field and a stellar 69.2% from beyond the arc. Luke Couch led the way with 25 points on 8-11 shooting from the field while finishing 3-3 from beyond the arc. Jordan Marshall posted 21 points on 9-14 shooting while grabbing five rebounds and providing three assists.

The Blazers will now look to build on the win as they travel to Georgia to take on Piedmont on Friday evening.
