JACKSON, Miss. – Despite an almost two-hour weather delay, the Belhaven Football team continued their winning ways Saturday night with a 42-15 win over visiting Southwestern. The Blazers avenged last year's 34-27 loss to the Pirates.
Junior quarterback
Tim Johnson found
Kolbe Blunt on a wheel route for a 38-yard touchdown to open the scoring. Receiver
KJ Hickman hauled in his first touchdown of the year with 7:21 to play in the opening frame to put the Blazers up 14-0.
The Green and Gold found paydirt again with 12:40 left in the half thanks to an 86-yard touchdown run from tailback
Devin Daniels. The long run set the record for the longest rush in Belhaven history.
After the lengthy delay, the Blazers didn't skip a beat.
Tim Johnson delivered his third touchdown pass of the half, finding
Cooper Tullo for a 27-yard score to put Belhaven up 28-0 heading into the break.
The Pirates found the scoreboard coming out of the locker room with a field goal. Late in the third quarter, Southwestern added six to the board to cut the Blazers' lead to 28-9 going into the final 15.
The visitors trimmed the Belhaven lead to 28-15 after finding the endzone on a double pass. Just a minute later, the Blazers responded as Blunt raced past the Pirates' defense for a 59-yard score to put the game out of reach.
The Blazers weren't done lighting up the scoreboard.
D'Ante Gallashaw broke free for a 65-yard touchdown run to extend the lead and cap off another impressive showing. Right before the clock struck midnight, Belhaven wrapped up the 42-15 victory to improve to 2-0.
The Blazers' defense imposed their will for a second straight week. Defensive lineman
Carlton Brown led the way in his record-breaking night. Brown finished with 6 tackles-for-loss and four sacks. Those marks both set Belhaven single-game records.
Safety
Corey Toliver was excellent in the secondary, finishing with nine stops and two tackles-for-loss. Last week's USA South Defensive Player of the Week
Phazion Locke finished with four pass breakups for the Blazers.
Offensively, the Blazers' running backs had themselves a night. The trio of
Kolbe Blunt,
Devin Daniels, and
D'Ante Gallashaw each recorded a score. Blunt led the way with 110 yards on 10 carries, with Daniels not far behind with 106 on just four carries. Gallashaw finished the night with 95 yards on 10 carries.
The Blazers will enjoy a bye week before traveling to Montgomery, Alabama to take on Huntingdon College in the conference opener. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
