MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Belhaven Football team suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday after being beaten on the road at Huntingdon in their USA South opener.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead on Saturday scoring on their first possession with a long touchdown run on 4th down. They then doubled their lead in the 1st Quarter with a punt return for a score taking an early 14-0 lead.
The Blazers got on the board early in the 2nd Quarter after putting together a long drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by QB
Tim Johnson. Later in the quarter, Belhaven was able to tie the game after
Kolbe Blunt carried it in from 11 yards out.
Before the end of the half Huntingdon retook the lead but a missed PAT made it a 20-14 Hawks lead at the break. Coming out of the half, both teams struggled to move the ball offensively but Belhaven was able to find the breakthrough and take their first lead on a touchdown pass from
Tim Johnson to
Nygil Owens.
Despite taking the lead, the advantage would be short-lived as Huntingdon answered with a quick score to make it a 27-21 game. Belhaven tried to move the ball late but the Hawks added one final score and held Belhaven in the final seven minutes to make it final.
Belhaven will look to bounce back and will search for their first conference win of the season next weekend when they head to Fayetteville, North Carolina to face off against Methodist. Kick off in NC is set for 12 PM.
