JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team made a strong showing in their season opener on Thursday with a convincing 3-1 win over Sul Ross State.
The former ASC foes squared off in non-conference action and it was the Lobos who had the better of the momentum in the early going. In the 9th minute Sul Ross put the ball in the net on a long distance volley for what seemed to be the opener but the goal was ruled out for offsides.
Later in the first half the Lobos nearly had the opener once again after a curling effort from outside the box struck the inside of the far post beofore it was cleared by a Belhaven defender. After the two close calls Belhaven settled and in the 38th minute took a 1-0 lead through center forward
Hayley Ruckle. The goal came from a cross by
Lizbeth Eslava that was pushed into the path of Ruckle by the Lobos' keeper and touched in for the BU goal.
Coming out of the half, Belhaven made quick work to find their second with
Emma Antonoplos scoring from a free kick just a minute into the period. The Blazers added a third goal on a breakaway in the 51st minute when
Kyla Shaw was set free down the right wing and sent a long distance shot over the head of the Sul Ross goalkeeper.
Sul Ross would get a goal back in the second half with a 74th minute tally after a rebound off the crossbar dropped kindly for the Lobos who headed home.
In total Belhaven outshot Sul Ross 12-11 however the Lobos had the better of the shots on target with six shots on frame to four for Belhaven.
Julianne Wilson made five saves for Belhaven and the Blazers had seven chances from corners.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday, September 3rd when they travel to Mount Berry, Georgia to face Berry College. Kick off against the Vikings is set for 12 PM.
