JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team cruised to an impressive 5-0 victory over Sul Ross State on Thursday, opening the 2022 season in style.
The Blazers took control of the game from kick off and got off to a blistering start scoring the opener just three minutes in to the contest. Deep in the attacking third
Aleksander Harris delivered a long throw-in that sailed past the Lobos goalkeeper and found
Igor Rudolph for the easy finish.
Then, just three minutes later, Belhaven got their second when
Lex Rogers found
Julian Carreira at the back post and the Blazers' defender headed home for his first career BU goal. Belhaven would continue to create chances in the first half but couldn't add to their lead until after the break.
Just 10 minutes into the second half Belhaven once again found the back of the net when
Zachary Mouton's volleyed shot was directed into the net by Christian Hernandez who also snagged a debut goal. Less than two minutes later, in the 55th minute, Belhaven once again found space at the back post with
Jake Estes having the time and space to side foot a cross home.
Belhaven grabbed their fifth and final goal in the 60th minute when a long throw by
Aleksander Harris once again caused problems for the Lobos' defense.
Julian Carreira popped up with his second goal of the match with a flicked header that beat the goalkeeper and secured the comfortable win for Belhaven.
On the day, Belhaven outshot Sul Ross 16-5 and had a 10-1 advantage in shots on target. In total, 24 different Blazers saw playing time as Belhaven opened up their season in memorable fashion.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, September 3rd when they host Fontbonne University in non-conference action. Kick off inside the Belhaven Bowl Stadium is set for 7:30 PM.
