Nathan Herron's Grand Slams Propel Blazers Past Hardin-Simmons

RICHARDSON, Texas - The Belhaven Baseball team started the ASC tournament on a strong note on Friday when they picked up an 11-4 win over Hardin-Simmons to move into the winner's bracket of the weekend. 

The Cowboys took the lead early with a single run in the 1st inning after capitalizing on an error by the Blazers but Belhaven would find the answer straight away levelling the score at a run apiece in the home half of the same frame following Nick Lucido's sac fly. 

The fireworks for the Blazers started in the 2nd inning when Nathan Herron belted a two-out pitch to left field for a grand slam that gave BU their first lead of the game, 5-1. After a scoreless 3rd frame for both squads the Blazers grabbed a run in the bottom of the 4th after Caleb Whittle scored on a passed ball. 

Harris Coleman continued to keep the Cowboys' quiet at the plate and Belhaven picked up another run in the bottom of the 5th after Kyle McLaughlin's RBI single scored Matthew Charbonnet. In the top of the 6th Hardin-Simmons got a run back with a solo home run which cut Belhaven's lead to 7-2 after the 6th inning. 

Nathan Herron put the game away in the 7th when he equalled ASC history grabbing his 2nd grand slam of the game, tying the conference record, once again drilling a two-out pitch over the left field wall. 

With Belhaven in front 11-2, the Cowboys would pick up two runs in the 8th inning but they were inconsequential to the result as Belhaven held on for the 11-4 victory.

With the win Belhaven will take on UT Dallas in the winner's bracket matchup tomorrow at 1 PM. The winner of that game secures a spot in the Red Bracket Final while the loser will play the winner of Concordia and Hardin-Simmons in an elimination game.
