Blazers Earn Conference Series Sweep Over Hardin-Simmons

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Softball team won both ends of their Friday doubleheader, winning game one 6-2 and closed out the day with a 10-2 run rule victory in six innings against Hardin-Simmons University to finish off their series sweep over the Cowgirls and improve to 28-5 overall and 20-4 in conference play.

GAME ONE

In the front end of Saturday's doubleheader the Blazers grabbed the first run of the ball game after Allie Gordon ripped a RBI single that scored Sydney Runnels to give Belhaven the early 1-0 advantage. In the bottom of the second inning, Haley Hanson hit a solo shot to center field for her first homerun of the year that extended the Blazers' lead to 2-0.

Both teams were scoreless in the third inning, but Haley Hanson came up to bat again in the bottom of the fourth and belted a 2 Run Homer as the Blazers took the 4-0 advantage. Still in the fourth inning, the Blazers tacked on two additional runs when Macy Ziskin scored from third base and Abby Trahan blasted her first home run of the year to give the Green and Gold the commanding 6-0 lead.

Hardin-Simmons broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth inning off of a 2-RBI double to make the score 6-2 going into the final two innings of play. The Blazers nor Cowgirls scored in the sixth or the seventh as Belhaven went on to take the series 2-0 and the game 6-2.

GAME TWO

In the series finale it was the visitors who took the early lead as they grabbed two runs in the top of the first inning after two defensive errors by the Blazers. In the bottom of the second, Abby Trahan put the Blazers on the board with a RBI double to center field that scored Haley Hanson to make the score 2-1. 

After a scoreless third inning,Sydney Runnels and Ellie Jones hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Blazers the 3-2 lead. Still in the fourth, Allie Gordon reached on an error that scored Ellie Jones to extend the Blazers lead to 4-2. The Green and Gold continued to score in the fourth after a RBI single by Kennedy Carruth and a RBI double by Marlee Blackwell to take the 6-2 advantage after four innings.

Belhaven's bats remained hot after a 2-RBI double to left center by Ellie Jones and a RBI single by Allie Gordon the Blazers took the commanding 9-2 lead after five innings. Marissa Rice came on to pitch hit and earned a sac fly that scored Jordan Kanipe from third base to give the Blazers a 10-2 run rule victory in six innings.

The Blazers will return to action on Friday April 22 for a doubleheader against the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2:00 p.m.
