Belhaven Softball Splits Doubleheader with McMurry in ASC Play

ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven Softball team split their doubleheader against the McMurry University War Hawks on the road. The War Hawks took game one by a final score of 3-2, but the Blazers bounced back in game two to take the 8-1 victory over McMurry. The Blazers are now 21-4 overall and 14-3 in conference play.

GAME ONE

Marlee Blackwell led the game off with a solo homerun to right field to give the Blazers the 1-0 advantage early on in game one. The Blazers and War Hawks held each other scoreless for the next three frames until McMurry caught an offensive spark in the fifth inning scoring three runs to give McM the 3-1 lead.The Blazers got one back in the top of the sixth inning to narrow the lead to 3-2. Belhaven had an opportunity to level the score in the top of the seventh, but could not push the run across. McMurry held on to take game one of the doubleheader by a final score of 3-2.

GAME TWO

The Blazers followed up the first game of the day scoring eight runs in the second contest with the runs starting in the top of the 3rd inning. After a triple by Gracey Baucom, Hanson singled up the middle to give the Blazers the early 1-0 lead. Macy Ziskin hit a RBI double to right center to extend the Blazers lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

Leading 2-0 going into the 5th inning, the Blazers bats came to life scoring six runs on six hits in the frame. Gordon got the scoring started when she hit a Sacrifice Fly to score Abby Trahan to give the Green and Gold the 3-0 lead. Carruth followed with another Sacrifice Fly to extend the Blazers lead to 4-0. Ellie Jones then stepped up to the plate and crushed a RBI double to give Belhaven the 5-0 advantage, before the War Hawks made a pitching change.

Back-to-Back singles by Sydney Runnels and Gracey Baucom pushed the Blazers lead to 8-0 going into the home half of the fifth inning. McMurry scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-1, but the Blazers held strong and defeated McMurry by an 8-1 final to capture game two of the doubleheader.

The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, April 2 in Abilene, Texas with the series on the line with McMurry. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
