JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team split their doubleheader against McMurry on Friday falling to the War Hawks in the series opener before bouncing back to take the second game of the day.
GAME ONE
In the series opener it was the visitors who struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning following an RBI double. Belhaven was quick to respond though leveling the game at a run apiece on an RBI single by
Kyle McLaughlin that scored
Nick Lucido.
Tied at 1-1 after one inning, the visitors retook the lead in the top of the 2nd scoring what would eventually be the winning run. The Belhaven bats were kept quiet from the first inning on and the War Hawks added runs in the 5th and 7th innings on their way to the 4-1 victory.
GAME TWO
Belhaven bounced back in a big way in the second game of Friday's doubleheader taking home a 6-4 win over the War Hawks. It was Belhaven who struck first in the game when, after a scoreless first inning, the Blazers' put together a six-run bottom of the 2nd. The scoring started when
Chase Kitchens delivered an RBI single that also moved
Nathan Herron to third base. Herron then swiped home on a wayward pick off attempt to first base to give Belhaven a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning the Blazers would grab a third run when
Kyle McLaughlin drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Nick Lucido followed up with a bases loaded double that cleared the bases and drove in three runs to give BU the 6-0 lead.
Belhaven starter
Brett Sanchez continued to hold the War Hawks at bay and limited the damage when McMurry did generate runs holding them to four runs scatter across the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th innings. Sanchez racked up 11 strikeouts, a new career high, and moved into 5th all-time in career strikeouts with his fourth win of the season while
Luke Miller came in late to secure the save.
