Walkoff Win Gives Belhaven Doubleheader Sweep of Howard Payne

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team took both ends of their Friday doubleheader over the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets with an 8-6 win in Game 1 and a 4-3 walkoff win in Game 2 to secure a third straight ASC series win. 

GAME ONE

Belhaven struck first in the series opener on Friday afternoon grabbing three runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning following an RBI single from Hunter White and a double that drove in a pair of runs from Matthew Charbonnet. The Blazers would take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a sac fly from Adam Leonard but the visitors would get on the board in the 5th with a pair of runs driven in on a sac fly and two out hit.

In the home half of the 5th though the Blazers would get the runs back quickly after Dawson Albin drove in a pair of runs on a base hit through the right side of the infield. Hunter White then grabbed another base hit scoring Albin who had advanced on an error putting the Blazers up 7-1 over the Yellow Jackets. Howard Payne would once again though find a route back into the contest with a two-run home run in the 6th inning.

Belhaven would score their final run of the game in bottom of the 6th inning on an RBI single from Nathan Herron to take an 8-4 lead into the final frame of the seven inning contest. In the top of the 7th Howard Payne would threaten though scoring two runs and getting runners on the corners with two outs. Luke Miller entered the game and got the final out for the Blazers though to secure Belhaven's win.

GAME TWO

In the second game of Friday's doubleheader it was the visitors who took the early lead with Howard Payne stringing together three hits in the top of the 1st inning and grabbing a pair of runs. Belhaven got a run back in the bottom half of the same frame when Caleb Whittle scored on Kyle McLaughlin's sac fly to left field. 

Howard Payne made it a 3-1 game in the top of the 4th inning and forced the Blazers to play from behind the rest of the game. The Blazers scored a run in the top of the 7th inning on a wild pitch that scored Kyle McLaughlin from third base. 

Trailing 3-2, it was the Blazers who came from behind in the bottom of the 9th putting together a rally in the final frame to secure the series win. After an error and hit by pitch put two runners aboard with one out, Dawson Albin delivered an RBI base hit to center field that scored Kyle McLaughlin to tie the game and on the same play, Nathan Herron was able to score the winning run on an error by the Yellow Jackets outfield.

Belhaven and Howard Payne will face off in the series finale on Saturday at 1 PM with the Blazers looking for a series sweep over their conference foe.
