JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Baseball team clinched their season series over the Millsaps Majors on Tuesday with a 5-3 victory that also ensures that the Maloney Series Trophy will spend another year with the Blazers.
The Belhaven bats started off the game slow but the Blazers took advantage of gifted opportunities by Millsaps striking for the first run of the game in the 3rd inning. After a leadoff hit-by-pitch,
Grayson Doss advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually came around to score the opener on another wild pitch. Meanwhile, Belhaven starter
David Hall kept the Majors off the board in the first two frames and
Christian Cassels held Millsaps scoreless in the 3rd inning.Â
The Blazers leaned on their bullpen in the game and through the middle innings
Reed Vincent,
Nate Hannum and
Preston Canale each posted a scoreless inning on the mound combining for seven strikeouts in total. Belhaven put some distance between themselves and the Majors with a two-RBI single by
Matthew Charbonnet in the 6th inning that gave BU a 3-0 lead.Â
In the 7th inning the Blazers added another run on
Dawson Albin's infield single that scored
Nick Lucido. Meanwhile
Logan Goodreau held the Majors scoreless in the 7th inning and helped take Belhaven into the final two frames up 4-0. The visitors were able to strike back for a pair of runs in the 8th inning but Goodreau escaped the jam with two runners, including the tying run, in scoring position.
Belhaven got a run back in the bottom of the 8th on
Gabe Inman's RBI single to shallow right field and the Blazers held a 5-2 lead heading to the final frame. After a leadoff double by the Majors, reliever
Will Swift came in to pitch and closed out the contest with the Blazers securing the 5-3 lead.Â
With the win Belhaven improves to 13-10 on the season and marks their 6th straight win over the Majors going back to 2019.Â
The Blazers return to action on Friday when they host McMurry University at Trustmark Park in the first two games of their conference series.Â
