BROWNWOOD, Texas – The Belhaven University women's basketball team captured a 85-56 win over the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets in American Southwest Conference play. With the win, the Blazers move to 8-7 overall and 4-7 in conference play.
The Blazers got off to a great start going on a 14-2 run with 4:11 remaining in the first quarter. The Jackets stormed back to make the score 21-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Green and Gold extended their lead to 28-11 after the under-five media timeout. Howard Payne went on a 12-4 run to close out the second quarter to make the score 32-23 going into the halftime break.
The Blazers opened the second half going on an 11-5 run to extend their lead to 43-28 after the first media timeout of the second half. The Blazers continued to shoot well and extended their lead by 23 points to end the third quarter. Belhaven outscored the Yellow Jackets 25-19 in the final quarter of play to take the 85-56 victory over the Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets on the road.
Xhiir Burgess had 28 points in the contest, which is a new career high for her. Additionally, she collected nine rebounds and six assists. Shomaria Overton contributed 15 points and posted 10 steals to give her a double-double in today's game. Kourtne Lee earned a new season-high with 15 points and shot 70 percent from the field, while Jakiya Jackson posted 10 points in the contest. As a team, the Blazers shot 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range, and shot 59.5 percent from the charity stripe.
The Blazers will return to action against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Tuesday, February 8 in Jackson, Miss. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
