AUSTIN, Texas – The Belhaven University women's basketball team dropped a 56-53 decision on Saturday afternoon against Concordia Texas in American Southwest Conference play.
The Blazers struggled from the field in the first quarter as Concordia outscored Belhaven 18-6 in the first quarter. The Tornados continued to shoot well from the floor to take the 33-13 advantage going into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Blazers started to heat up from the field as they cut lead to just 12 points with 2:15 remaining in the third. Concordia took the 50-36 lead into the final quarter of play. The Blazers opened the fourth quarter going on a 16-0 run to take the 52-50 lead for the first time in the contest. Concordia went on a 6-1 run to close the game and grab the 56-53 victory over the Blazers.
Xhiir Burgess led the Blazers with 19 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. Poindexter finished the game going 4-for-9 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
The Blazers finished the regular season with a 10-10 overall record and grabbed the #8 seed in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. Belhaven will travel to Marshall, Texas to take on #1 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru on Thursday, February 24. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
