MARSHALL, Texas – The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team fell in a close contest to #1 seed UMHB in the American Southwest Conference Tournament by a final score of 60-51 on Thursday afternoon.
The Blazers and the Cru played great defense to open the contest as the score was 6-3 with UMHB holding on to the slight advantage after the first media timeout. Belhaven fought back in the final five minutes of the first quarter to even the score up at 11.
The Cru started to heat up offensively going on a 16-8 run to make the score 27-19 with four minutes left in the second quarter. The Blazers kept the score close, but the Cru took the 30-26 advantage into the halftime break.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening four minutes of the third quarter, but UMHB held a 37-30 lead with six minutes to go in the third frame. The Blazers and Cru battled in the final six minutes of the third quarter, however UMHB still held on to the 44-37 advantage.
UMHB started to gain some momentum as they lead by 11 points with five minutes left in regulation. In the final minutes of regulation, UMHB held strong to grab the 60-51 victory over the Blazers.
Shomaria Overton led the Blazers with 18 points, shot 50 percent from behind the arc, and grabbed nine rebounds.
Xhiir Burgess totaled 12 points in the game and registered six rebounds.
Jakiya Jackson finished the contest with nine points and shot 75 percent from the charity stripe, while
Hayle Poindexter went 3-for-5 from the floor and scored seven points.
Kourtne Lee rounded out the scoring for the Blazers with five points and shot 50 percent from the field and from long range.
The Blazers finished their season 10-11 overall and 5-10 in conference play. The Blazers were 5-5 at home during the 2021-22 season.
