BELTON, Texas – The Belhaven University women's basketball team came up short on the road to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru by a final score of 61-53 in American Southwest Conference play. Despite the loss, the Blazers have clinched a spot in the American Southwest Conference Tournament, which will be held in Marshall, Texas.
The Blazers got the scoring started early on as BU went on a 13-4 run through the first six minutes of play in the first quarter. Belhaven went on to take the 17-9 advantage going into the second quarter. The Green and Gold maintained the lead and did not let the hosts gain the advantage, as the Blazers and Cru were all knotted up at 24 going into the halftime break.
UMHB took the lead early on in the third quarter, but the Blazers immediately regained the lead. The Blazers extended the lead to four points with 2:05 remaining in the third frame. The Cru tied the game up at 36 with 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter. UMHB caught an offensive spark and outscored Belhaven 25-17 in the final quarter as the Cru defeated BU 61-53.
Hayle Poindexter led the Blazers with 12 points and shot 66.6 percent from the field, while
Shomaria Overton also finished the contest with 12 points had a team-high four assists, and shot 5-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Jakiya Jackson scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Blazers will return to the court for their last game of the regular season against the Concordia Texas Tornados in Austin, Texas on Saturday February 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
