JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team defeated the University of the Ozarks Eagles by a final score of 60-48 in the final home contest of the season. With the win, the Blazers improve to 10-8 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
The Blazers started the game slow as the Eagles took the 11-7 lead at the 3:29 mark of the first quarter. Belhaven caught an offensive spark and closed out the first quarter going on a 9-1 run to give the Blazers the 16-12 advantage over the Eagles. The Blazers extended their lead to 15 points with 2:17 left in the first half. Belhaven went into halftime with the 36-23 advantage.
Both teams went back and forth for the majority of the quarter, but the Blazers held onto the 45-34 lead going into the final quarter of regulation. The Blazers continued to shoot well from the floor and extended their lead to 14 points midway through the quarter. Belhaven went on to take the 60-48 victory over the Blazers.
Xhiir Burgess led the Blazers with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals in the contest.
Shomaria Overton also scored 17 points and added five rebounds. Brookelynn Saxton had seven point, five assists, and three rebounds in the game. As a team, the Blazers shot 44.4 percent from behind the arc and 41.2 percent from the field.
The Blazers will return to action on Thursday, February 17 with a contest with the University of Mary Hardin- Baylor Cru in Belton, Texas. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
