JACKSON, Miss. - As 2022 draws to a close, Belhaven Athletics is proud to recount some of the many moments displayed by Belhaven student-athletes and teams that made this calendar year one to remember. Over the remainder of the year, each day (excl. 12/24 & 12/25) we will profile two moments, one individual and one team-based, that were among the best of 2022.

TOP 22 MOMENTS IN 2022: BRETT SANCHEZ NAMED FINALIST FOR FERRISS TROPHY

Our next moment to be profiled came in May of this year when Brett Sanchez was named a finalist for the Ferriss Trophy. The Ferris Trophy is presented to the Most Outstanding Baseball Player in the State of Mississippi. Sanchez was the fourth finalist for the Blazers in the 18 year history of the award.

Sanchez had a stellar 2022 season and helped guide the Blazers to a third place finish in the American Southwest Conference regular season standings and a trip to the semifinals in the ASC Tournament.

Sanchez was the ace on the pitching staff for the Blazers and finished the year with an 8-1 record on the mound in 11 starts. Additionally, he posted and 2.01 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, racked up 84 strikeouts in 85.0 innings pitched during the season.

The Slidell, Miss. native earned many accolades throughout the season including: D3baseball.com All-American Second Team, All-Region X First team, ABCA All-Region X First Team, All-ASC First Team, two-time ASC Pitcher of the Week, and was a finalist for the prestigious Boo Ferriss Trophy.
