Belhaven Shuts Out NC Wesleyan 24-0

JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven knocked off North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Battling Bishops 24-0. The Blazers' defensive unit held the Bishops to just 194 yards on the day.

Belhaven found the endzone late in the opening frame get things going. After Zach Hammett came down with a tough 38-yard reception to get into the redzone, Ras Pace took the snap off the left side and fought his way past the goal-line from 11 yards out to go up 7-0.

Both teams exchanged punts over the new few drives, but the Green and Gold struck again late in the first half. Quarterback Tim Johnson connected with a wide-open Brooks Brymer down the numbers for a 41-yard score.

After the defense forced a three-and-out out of the locker room, Kolbe Blunt led the Blazers down the field and finished the drive with a score from four yards out to extend the lead to 21-0.

Just two plays later, Corey Toliver picked off an errant Bishop pass to give the ball back to the offense deep in NC Wesleyan territory. Later that drive, Constantine Hontzas connected on a 33-yard field goal to put Belhaven up 24-0.

Toliver once against halted a scoring chance late in the fourth quarter from NC Wesleyan, picking off a pass inside the five-yard line to preserve the shutout.

Offensively, Johnson finished the day 10-for-20 for 142 yards and a touchdown pass. Blunt racked up 64 yards and a score on 11 carries. Brymer led the way receiving, hauling in two passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.

Defensive coordinator Matt Conner's group was unrelenting all day long. Toliver stood out in the secondary, coming down with two interceptions and a team-leading seven tackles. Connor Fordham and Josiah Raymond also finished with seven tackles apiece.

Freshman defensive end Eli Webb posed problems for the Bishops' offensive line throughout the contest, racking up six tackles with 3.5 for a loss. Webb also collected two sacks.

Belhaven improved to 4-1 (2-1 USAS) with the shutout victory. The Blazers will head to Greensboro College next Saturday, October 15th to battle the Pride. Kickoff is set for 11 AM.
