Second Half Outburst Sends Belhaven Past Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Men's Soccer team cruised to a non-conference win in the Riverside Derby on Wednesday with a second half outburst that sent them past the Millsaps Majors.

Belhaven dominated the run of play in the first half and finally found a breakthrough at the half hour mark. The play started with a ball out wide to Julian Carreira who worked it to Jacob Requilman in the box. Requilman was able to work himself free for a tight-angle shot that initially looked to be saved by the Majors' keeper before deflecting across the goal-line for the opener.

The second half continued in similar fashion with the Blazers' largely controlling the creation of chances and eventually found their second as a Belhaven corner from Jacob Requilman dropped for Julian Carreira who redirected it into the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Belhaven's second goal had them firing in attack and they swiftly found a third when their high press forced a turnover deep in the attacking third. Aleksander Harris blocked a Millsaps clearance and the ball fell to James Dempsey who found space in the box and fired it in at the far post in the 70th minute.

The Blazers weren't done yet as Christian Hernandez worked hard and drew a foul on the edge of the Millsaps 18-yard box. Justin Phipps stood over the free kick and sent one towards the near post where Lex Rogers found himself unmarked. Rogers headed home in the 74th minute to help ice the match for the Blazers.

Millsaps would draw a goal back with just under 15 minutes to play but in the end, it wasn't enough to spark a late comeback bid as Belhaven held on comfortably for the rivalry win.

In the match Belhaven outshot the Majors 16-5 in total and 7-3 in shots on target. Jacob Requilman finished with a goal and assist for the Blazers while seven different Belhaven players tallied a shot on goal. Max Rudolph made two saves across 71 minutes of action before being replaced by Caleb Thompson late on.

The Blazers improved to 4-5-3 on the season with the win. Belhaven will now return to conference play when they face Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. That match is slated for 2 PM this Saturday.
