Belhaven Shuts Out Huntingdon, Punches Ticket to CCS Semi-Final

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team punched their ticket to the Semi-Final round of the Collegiate Conference of the South postseason tournament on Saturday with a 2-0 clean sheet victory over Huntingdon.

The Blazers, who entered as the #3 seed in the tournament, got an early start over the #7 Hawks when their high press forced a turnover in the attacking third. Lizbeth Eslava got on the ball inside the Huntingdon penalty area and unselfishly tee'd up an effort for Emma Antonoplos who notched the opener.

From there Belhaven looked like they would push on and grab a quick second with a tight-angle shot from Kyla Shaw forcing the Hawks' goalkeeper into a great save and a follow-up bid by BU at the back post ricocheting off the post.

Belhaven hit the post on multiple occasions in the first half and had multiple shots just clear the crossbar. Off a corner, the Blazers nearly had a goal but it was cleared off the line and they weren't able to get a second before the halftime intermission.

Coming out of the break the Blazers put the Huntingdon goal under plenty of pressure generating numerous early chances. However, time and time again they were denied by the Hawks' goalkeeper. Belhaven also saw strong chances go by the wayside through missed efforts leaving the door open for a potential Hawks' comeback.

Hayley Ruckle would put the Blazers' worries to bed though in the 85th minute with a slick, left-footed volley. The Blazers earned a late corner which was sent into a dangerous area. Huntingdon got an initial header but the clearance fell directly to Ruckle who smashed it home for an important insurance goal.

The Blazers in the end knocked off Huntingdon 2-0 after outshooting Huntingdon 26-2 overall. Belhaven also dwarfed the Huntingdon attack in shots on target with 13 compared to the Hawks' two.

Now the Blazers will travel to Maryville, Tennesee to take on the #2 seeded Maryville Scots in the CCS Semifinal round. The match against Maryville is set for Wednesday, November 2nd.
