MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team saw their run in the Collegiate Conference of the South come to a close on Wednesday as they were beaten in a penalty shootout by Maryville College.
The Blazers came into the Semi-Final matchup as the #3 seed in the tournament while the hosts held the #2 seed for the CCS. It was the hosts who got off to a fast start converting on their first chance of the day to take the lead in just the 3rd minute.
Belhaven continued to battle in the knockout match and got a good chance just past the quarter-hour mark when
Emma Antonoplos was brought down right on the edge of the Scots' penalty area. However the Blazers couldn't convert the free kick and would find themselves trailing at the break.
In the second half it was the Blazers who took control and they would get their well deserved equalizer in the 56th minute as a long ball down the right wing set
Kyla Shaw in behind. Shaw picked up the ball and cut inside on her left foot before sending a curling shot inside the far post and netting Belhaven their needed goal.
The second half wore on with neither team able to gain a foothold late and the match would carry into extra time. In the first 10 minute period of extra time the Blazers nearly found a breakthrough on multiple occasions with five shots on target but the Scots' keeper was able to keep them out of the back of the net.
After the second period of extra time came and went without a decisive goal from either side the match went into a penalty shootout. After both teams converted their first opportunity the Blazers saw a pair of spot kicks denied and Maryville was able to seal a spot in the CCS Final.
Belhaven finishes the season 9-7-3 overall marking the fourth straight season they have finished with a winning record as Head Coach Kimberely Harrell pulls level alongside Corey Rose as the third-winningest coach in program history.
Emma Antonoplos finishes the year as the Blazers leading goalscorer and goal provider with eight goals and six assists on the season.
Kyla Shaw and
Hayley Ruckle both end the campaign with seven goals while
Lizbeth Eslava provides double-digit goal contributions with five goals and five assists.
