LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.– The Belhaven University volleyball team split their Doubleheader against Covenant College and Wesleyan College on Saturday in conference action. The Blazers fell in straight sets to the Scots in the opening match of the day before bouncing back with a three set sweep over Wesleyan College.
In the opening match of the day, the Blazers fell behind early on as the Scots took the 17-7 lead in the opening set. Belhaven cut the lead to five points after going on a 7-2 run to bring the score to 19-14. After a 5-0 run by both squads the scots took the 25-19 advantage over the Green and Gold in the first set.
Belhaven fell behind early in the second set as Covenant took a commanding 17-9 lead midway through the second set. The Scots went on an 8-3 run to close out the set and take the 25-12 set victory and the 2-0 lead. Covenant dominated the third set to take the 3-0 victory over the Blazers.
Jeslian Vazquez led the offense with eight kills, while
Emma Gardner and Kyler Martin had four kills apiece. Defensively,
Rylee White registered two blocks and
Miriam Ateca posted 14 assists.
In the second match of the day the Blazers bounced back and swept the Wesleyan Wolves by a final score of 3-0.
The Blazers and Wolves went back and forth for the majority of the first set. Belhaven took the 24-21 lead late in the first set, but Wesleyan came back to tie up the set at 24. The Blazers scored the next two points to take the first set by a final score line of 26-24.
Belhaven held the slight 18-15 edge over the Wolves late in the second set. The Wolves tried to rally, but the Green and Gold held strong to earn the 25-21 set victory and take the 2-0 match lead. The Blazers dominated the third and final set by a final score of 25-14.
Jeslian Vazquez led the Blazers with a season best 16 kills, while
Emma Gardner recorded eight kills and a team high four service aces. Defensively,
Caitlin Torok and Vazquez led the Green and Gold with 12 digs and
Miriam Ateca once again led the Blazers with 27 assists.
The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday, November 1 against Berea College in the CCS Volleyball Championships in Berea, KY.
