BEREA, KY. – The Belhaven University volleyball team concluded their 2022 season on Tuesday as they took on Berea College in the Collegiate Conference of the South Quarterfinals at Berea. The Blazers fell to the Mountaineers in straight sets.
In the opening set, the Blazers fell behind early on as Berea took the 5-1advantage. The Mountaineers extended their lead to eight points late in the contest. The Blazers went on to drop the opening set by a 25-18 scoreline.
In the second set, Belhaven jumped out to a 7-3 lead early on as Berea was forced to call a timeout to stop the Blazers momentum. The Green and Gold held on to the lead for the majority of the second until the final five points of the set. With the score being 20-20, the hosts went on a 5-2 run to close out the second set and earn the 25-22 set victory over Belhaven to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In the third and final set, Belhaven once again had the 5-1 lead to open the contest and maintained the lead until they reached 15 points. The Blazers struggled to close out the third set as the Mountaineers caught fire and went on a 12-3 run to close the set to earn the 25-18 set victory and claim the match 3-0.
Reigning CCS Rookie of the Week,
Jeslian Vazquez, led the Blazers with 10 kills, while
Ellie Jones posted seven kills in the match. Multiple Blazers' earned a service ace in the contest. Defensively,
Ellie Jones registered four blocks, while
Emma Gardner finished the match with a team-high 15 digs. Additionally,
Miriam Ateca collected 13 assists in the final match of the season.
The Blazers conclude the 2022 season with an overall record of 10-18 and 7-9 in conference play. Head Volleyball Coach
Kody Bivins in his first season led the Green and Gold to 10 wins, which is the most wins since the 2018 season.
