JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven put on a show Friday night, steamrolling LaGrange 70-16. The Blazers were dominant from the start, scoring on their first two drives to set the tone early.
Tim Johnson and the offense struck first on a 20-yard touchdown pass to
KJ Hickman to cap off an efficient eight-play, 65-yard drive. Johnson then connected with
Jacobey James-Grace from 33 yards out to put the Blazers up 14-0 midway through the opening quarter.
After a long Panther drive ended in three points, Belhaven went back to work.
Ras Pace hit
Devin Daniels on a screen pass, and the speedy tailback took it in for six.
Constantine Hontzas tacked on the extra point, breaking the single-single PAT record at Belhaven with his 40th of the year.
After the Blazers' defense forced a three-and-out, Belhaven blocked the Panther punt and recovered it deep in LaGrange territory. Two plays later, Johnson connected with
Bogan Brewer for a 13-yard score to go up 28-3.
Belhaven showed no signs of slowing down, recovering an ensuing onside kick to take over at their own 27. The Blazers' offense drove down the field, and Johnson finished the drive off with an 18-yard touchdown run to put Belhaven in front 35-3.
A quick three-and-out gave Belhaven the ball back, and
Kolbe Blunt found paydirt from 10 yards out to finish a quick four-play, 55-yard drive. The Blazers weren't done lighting up the scoreboard just yet in the first half as
Devin Daniels went untouched on a 20-yard scamper to give Belhaven a commanding 49-3 lead. On the following possession,
Josiah Raymond intercepted an errant Panther pass to polish off an impressive opening half by the Blazers.
The Panthers put an end to the Blazers' 35 unanswered points with a touchdown on the opening possession of the second half. The Blazers responded with six of their own as Blunt punched it in from six yards out to break the Blazers' single-season rushing touchdown record with his 14th of the year.
The Blazers continued to roll as Pace found a wide-open
D'Ante Gallashaw for a 32-yard touchdown to put Belhaven up 63-9.
Landry Huddleston and
Wyatt Beck combined for a forced fumble on the next LaGrange drive, and
Devin Daniels capitalized by scoring his second touchdown of the game from 20 yards out to go up 70-9. LaGrange broke free for a long touchdown run with under a minute to play, but the night belonged to the Blazers.
Once again Belhaven controlled all three phases of the game. Offensively, Belhaven racked up 691 total yards to just 221 for LaGrange. Belhaven's 70-point outburst tied the single-game record for points in a game, which was set back in 2012.
Tim Johnson was dynamic on the ground and through the air for the offense. The quarterback finished 10-for-16 for 181 yards and three touchdowns and added 82 yards and a score on the ground.
Blunt led the Belhaven rushing attack that accumulated 449 rushing yards on the night. The junior back finished with 138 yards and two scores on 13 carries.
Devin Daniels added 108 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. Daniels,
KJ Hickman, and James-Grace each hauled in receiving touchdowns.
Defensively, the Blazers forced two turnovers on the night. Linebacker
Connor Fordham led the way with seven tackles. Defensive back
Josiah Raymond hauled in his first interception of the season.
Eli Webb,
Landry Huddleston,
Icarius Hodgin, and
Kody McCraney all recorded sacks in the dominating defensive performance.
Belhaven now sits at 7-1 (5-1 USAS) on the season. The Blazers have now won five straight and have outscored their last four opponents 195-29. Belhaven will travel to Brevard College next Saturday, November 5th to take on the Tornados. Kickoff is set for 12 PM CT.
