Blazers Secure First Ever Eight Win Season with 20-7 Victory Over Brevard

BREVARD, NC - The Belhaven Football team completed a historic victory on Saturday when they knocked off Brevard 20-7 on the road to secure the first ever eight-win season in program history. The Blazers, now 8-1, have put together the best seasons in program history in back-to-back years after finishing 7-3 last fall and guaranteeing an eight-win campaign this year.

The battle between the Blazers and the Tornados was a quiet one early on with the defenses making the majority of the plays. Both teams were able to move the ball some in the first quarter but neither team could find a breakthrough in the opening 15 minutes.

Early in the second quarter however the Blazers would find pay dirt when the Tornados' defense jumped offside and set up a free play for Tim Johnson and Belhaven. Johnson took advantage with a deep shot and found receiver Jacobey James-Grace for a 62-yard touchdown connection that put Belhaven in front 7-0.

The Blazers would get a quick second score on the ensuing Brevard drive when they forced a punt deep in the Tornados territory. Belhaven linebacker Connor Fordham got a hand on the Brevard punt and was recovered by Luke Fondren who took it in from four yards out for the special teams score.

With the Blazers on top 13-0 partway through the second quarter the hosts would get their answer with a 28-yard touchdown pass and less than two minutes left in the opening half. Belhaven would take their 13-7 lead into the break and extend their advantage early in the third quarter with another stellar special teams play.

Connor Fordham would get his second blocked punt of the game on the Brevard two-yard line just a couple of minutes into the third quarter and set BU up with incredible field position. It took just one play for Kolbe Blunt to punch it in for his 15th rushing score of the season as the Mobile-native tied the Blazers' career rushing touchdown record pulled alongside Bradley Foley with 25 in his BU career.

The Belhaven defense would go on to pitch a shutout in ther second half including holding Brevard off the board with a stellar red zone stand in the 4th quarter. The Tornados had 4th & 2 from the BU 3-yard line and Belhaven stood tall to turn the football over on downs.

Belhaven improved to 8-1 on the season as mentioned above and are 6-1 in the USA South. They will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, November 12th when they host Maryville College for Senior Day. Kickoff at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium is set for 12 PM.
