JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Football team cruised to a 42-6 win on homecoming over Southern Virginia Saturday afternoon, racking up over 500 yards of offense in the process. The Blazers, winners of four straight, improve to 6-1 (4-1 USAS) in 2022.
The Blazers' offense went to work immediately. Following a three-and-out forced by the defense,
Tim Johnson connected with
Jacobey James-Grace for 27 yards on Belhaven's first play from scrimmage. The Blazers used some trickery on the next play as
Ras Pace took the sweep before throwing it back to Johnson, who found a wide-open
Brooks Brymer down the field for a 31-yard score.
On the Blazers' next offensive possession, the running attack of Johnson and
Kolbe Blunt took the Green and Gold right down the field. Fullback
Bogan Brewer capped off the drive by punching it in from two yards out.
Belhaven once again stuck to the ground game as Blunt took it in from 22 yards out to give the Blazers a 21-0 lead late in the first quarter. The ground game continued to shine in the first half as
Devin Daniels scampered in for a 10-yard touchdown to go up 28-0.
After Belhaven blocked a Knight punt and two Johnson carries, Blunt broke away for a 35-yard score to put Belhaven ahead 35-0 heading into the break.
After the halftime homecoming festivities concluded, the Blazers came out and continued to control all phases of the game. Blunt scored his third touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half, a 56-yard run to extend the lead to 42-0.
Both teams traded possessions for the remainder of the game, with the Knights finding the endzone midway through the fourth quarter to get on the board. When the clock hit triple-zeroes, the Blazers wrapped up a 42-6 victory in front of a solid homecoming crowd.
Just a week after breaking a single-game record for most rushing yards (492), Blunt and co. accumulated 392 yards and five rushing touchdowns. The junior running back led the way with 173 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. Johnson ran for 91 yards on six carries, and
D'Ante Gallashaw finished with three carries for 45 yards.
Johnson went 3-for-5 for 74 yards and a score through the air.
Ben Owens was solid in relief, completing 6-of-7 passes for 55 yards.
Defensively, linebacker
Connor Fordham led the way with nine tackles and two TFLs. He also added a sack to his statline.
Jay'Den Jones finished with seven tackles, with
Luke Fondren racking up six stops with two for a loss.
The Green and Gold were dominant in all three phases of the game. Belhaven blocked two Knight punts on the day. The Blazers also outgained the visitors 522 to 204 in total yards.
Belhaven returns to action next Saturday, October 29th when they host LaGrange. Kickoff from the Bowl is set for 12 PM.
