JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team cruised to a 5-1 win over Huntingdon on Thursday in their penultimate conference match as the regular season winds to a close. The win, which pushed the Blazers to 6-1 in CCS play, also put Belhaven atop the Collegiate Conference of the South standings with one match to play.
The goal-fest started in the 11th minute when
Kyla Shaw played a sharp ball over the top of the Huntingdon defense and
Emma Antonoplos tracked it down and fired it into the bottom corner for the opener.Â
Belhaven doubled their advantage less than five minutes later when
Lizbeth Eslava was found by Shaw at the back post and converted a quick finish for her fifth goal of the season. The Blazers would make it a trio of first half goals when
Hayley Ruckle took advantage of a referee advantage and was the first to pounce on a loose ball in the box. Ruckle beat a pair of Huntingdon defenders for a quick finish across net for her sixth tally of the year.
The second half started with the visitors in control and it looked like Huntingdon might find a path back into the match when they pulled a goal back after five minutes. After conceeding though the Blazers regained control and dominated possession for a large portion of the half before finding their fourth goal of the match.
Emma Antonoplos restored the Belhaven three-goal lead with an accurate header inside the far post after a sharp cross provided by
Reagan Nichols.
After the 76th minute goal Belhaven went on to ice the match when
Lauren Snell raced to a free ball in the box and was able to poke it past a charging goalkeeper for the Blazers' fifth goal.
Belhaven has now won six straight in conference play with the win over Huntingdon and over that stretch has outscored their opposition 27-1. The Hawks' goal in the 50th minute marked the first goal conceeded by Belhaven in conference play in over 550 minutes.Â
Now Belhaven turns their attention to Covenant College who travel to Jackson on Saturday, October 22nd for the final CCS match of the season. The Blazers currently sit two points ahead of both Maryville and Piedmont in the conference standings meaning they can secure top spot with a victory over the Scots.
