Women’s Basketball Falters in Close Contest with LeTourneau

JACKSON, Miss. –  The Belhaven University women's basketball team faltered in a close contest against LeTourneau University Yellowjackets in American Southwest Conference play. With the loss, the Blazers fall to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

The Blazers and Yellowjackets exchanged baskets throughout the first quarter, but the Green and Gold had the 23-18 advantage at the end of the first frame. LeTourneau tied the game up at 27 early in the second quarter and maintained the lead for the rest of the first half.

Both teams led during the third quarter, but the Blazers took the 51-47 advantage going into the final frame of regulation.  There were multiple lead changes during the majority of the fourth quarter, but the Yellowjackets took control in the final minute of play. LETU went on to defeat the Blazers by a final score of 67-65.

Xhiir Burgess led the Blazers with 19 points, eight rebounds, and played all 40 minutes of play. Ladedra Bryant finished the game with 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Shomaria Overton and Jakiya Jackson each had nine points in the contest. Venita Williams posted six points in the game, while Brooklyn Saxton totaled five points. Hayle Poindexter and Kourtne Lee rounded out the scoring for the Green and Gold with four and two points respectively.

The Blazers will return to action on Thursday, February 3 against the Sul Ross State University Lobos in Alpine, Texas. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
