JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball pulled out an stellar 88-73 over LeTourneau University on Saturday ending the YellowJackets seven-game winning streak and putting the Blazers back in the win column.
Belhaven started the game on the right foot with a made three by
Jay Brantley and despite trading buckets with LeTourneau held the lead until the 11:22 mark of the first half. It was the YellowJackets who controlled the latter portion of the opening half taking advantage of some off target shooting by the Blazers to open up a 32-20 lead at the 5:54 mark of the first half. The guests held a double-digit advantage until a long two just before the close of the first half took it down to a 38-29 LeTourneau lead at the break.
In the second half the Blazers came out firing on all cylinders with a quick 11-2 run that put them on top 41-40 less than two minutes into the second half. Despite the quick start to the second half it was the YellowJackets who led 55-53 at the midway point of the second half. Belhaven came to life on both ends of the floor though in the final nine minutes of the contest and outscored their opposition 35-18 with stellar shooting from beyond the arc and free throw line.
Belhaven's second half dominance was sparked in large part by
Luke Couch who finished the game with 25 points all of which came in the second half. Couch also finished with five assists, three rebounds and three steals in what would be a career milestone night as he became just the 20th player in Belhaven Men's Basketball history to score 1000 points in their career.
Arother Ratliff was dominant on both ends of the floor in the game scoring 20 points and pulling down a team-high 14 rebounds in the win.
Jay Brantley finished with 14 points on 4-7 shooting from three while
Matthew McMillan added six points, five rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes on the floor.
As a team the Blazers shot 50% from the field and finished with a 40% team average from three making 10 of their 25 attempts from long range. Belhaven also went 20-24 from the free throw line. Belhaven out-rebounded the YellowJackets 35-28 and finished with a team total of 24 assists on 29 made field goals. On defense Belhaven held LeTourneau to just 43.5% shooting from the field in the game and just 27.8% shooting in the final 11 minutes. Belhaven also limited the three-point field goals for the guests who went 1-8 in from three in that same span.
The Blazers will look to stay in the win column next Thursday, February 3rd, as they travel to Alpine, Texas to square off against Sul Ross State. Tip off against the Lobos is set for 7:30 PM.
