JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven University women's basketball team fell in a close contest against the UT Dallas Comets in American Southwest Conference play inside Rugg Arena. With the loss, the Blazers move to 7-5 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
The Blazers and Comets exchanged baskets in the opening minutes of the first quarter, but the Blazers kept the score close to trail by four points with 2:14 left in the first quarter. The Blazers leveled the score at 17 to end the first quarter. Belhaven gained the lead early on in the second quarter, but the Comets regained the lead to as many as 11 points in the second frame. The Blazers went on a 4-0 run to close out the first half, but still trailed 32-25.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Blazers were on fire as they fought back from being down seven to tie the ball game up at 36. Belhaven out shot UTD 19-11 in the third frame and took the 43-42 advantage to the fourth quarter. The Comets took the lead back from the Blazers and extended their lead to 11 points midway through the final frame. UTD went on to seal the game by a final score of 65-57.
Xhiir Burgess led the Blazers with 17 points and went 8-for-12 from the field.
Shomaria Overton posted 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, and shot 70 percent from the charity stripe.
Hayle Poindexter shot 75 percent from the floor and collected eight points, while
Kourtne Lee and
Ladedra Bryant made seven points apiece.
Jakiya Jackson rounded out the scoring for the Green and Gold with two points. As a team, the Blazers shot 44.7 percent from the field and 72.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Blazers will return to action on Saturday, January 29 against the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets inside Rugg Arena. Tipoff is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
