JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University volleyball team faltered twice on the final day of the Belhaven Invitational. The Blazers had a four-set dual with Centenary College before traveling to Millsaps and took them four sets.
Match One
Belhaven played in the second match of the day in the Belhaven invitational against the Centenary College Ladies.
Centenary and Belhaven went back and forth in the first set, but the Ladies rallied late to pick up the 25-20 first-set victory. Centenary continued to carry the momentum into the second set and grabbed the 25-21 set victory to force a win or go home for the Blazers. Not to go down without a fight, the Blazers picked up the close 25-22 third set victory over the Ladies. Centenary would narrowly defeat Belhaven to win the set and the match by a final score of 3-1.
Sara Scott led the charge for the Blazers posting 11 kills, three digs, and tallied 11 points in the match. Emily Carroll registered 10 kills, two service aces, and nine digs in the contest. As a team, the Blazers totaled 45 kills, six aces, and 74 digs.
Match Two
The Blazers then traveled across the street to square off against the Millsaps College Majors but came up short in a four-set bout. Both teams were knotted up at 12 apiece until the Majors gained the momentum and sealed the first set victory by a final score of 25-16.
The Blazers battled back in the second set, but Millsaps sealed the deal late to pick up a 25-23 set victory. With their backs against the wall, the Blazers knew they must pick up a win to keep the match alive and they did just that. The Green and Gold blasted the Majors in the third set picking up a 25-15 set victory to force a fourth set. Belhaven and Millsaps went back and forth for most of the fourth set, but unfortunately the Majors took the set and the match by a final score of 3-1.
Sara Scott led the Blazers with 13 kills, while Caitlin Torok finished the match with seven kills. Defensively, Ellie Jones registered four solo blocks and assisted on three additional blocks.
The Blazers will return to action on September 10 in the Spike it up Classic, hosted by Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Blazers will play Occidental College and Mortavian University on the first day of the tournament. The first match is set for 10am with the second match being at 5:00 p.m.
