COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Belhaven Volleyball team opened up the first day of the 2021 Colorado College Spike It Up Classic on Friday with matches against Occidental College and Moravian University.
MATCH ONE
In the first match of the day, the Blazers faced Occidental College from Los Angeles, Calif. and were beaten in three sets by the Tigers. The Blazers took an early lead in the first set against Occidental but the Tigers rallied late in the set to knock off Belhaven by a tight scoreline of 25-23. Occidental was able to push on with a 25-10 win in the second set and Belhaven mounted a comeback attempt late in the match but fell short, dropping the final set by a score of 25-23.
Against Occidental, the Blazers were led by
Callista Moore who racked up a team high five kills. Isabella Erickson and
Sara Scott followed closely behind with four kills each.
Grace Eidson and
Grace Laukhuf helped provide chances for their teammates with eight assists and seven assists respectively. Meanwhile
Ellie Jones posted a team high four blocks while
Sara Scott provided eight total digs.
MATCH TWO
Belhaven was beaten 3-1 in the second match of their day taking on Moravian University from Bethlehem, Penn. The match against the Greyhounds was tight with Moravian taking both the first and second sets by 25-23 score lines. The Blazers rallied for a solid 25-15 in the third set set to extend the match but a late rally from Moravian in the fourth set saw the Blazers fall on the evening.
In the second match the Blazers were led by
Sara Scott who finished with 14 kills, the second most of any player. Isabella Erickson tacked on seven more kills to add to her total on the day while
Callista Moore added six kills.
Grace Eidson posted 21 assists, her second highest total on the season while
Grace Laukhuf finished with 18 assists, a new season high.
Kristin Fogan led the defensive effort for the Blazers as she finished with 23 digs, a season high.
The Blazers will look to bounce back on day two as they take on the hosts, Colorado College, at 1 PM before facing Howard Payne at 3 PM. Both times listed are central times.
