COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Belhaven University volleyball team split a doubleheader in the final day of the 2021 Spike it Up Classic, hosted by Colorado College. Belhaven squared off against Colorado College and Howard Payne University in a doubleheader.
Match One
In the first match of the doubleheader, the Blazers took on Colorado College and fell in straight sets. The tigers took a commanding in the opening set and took the first det by a final score of 25-13 to gain the 1-0 adbvantage in the match.
The Blazers took the lead early on in the second set, but the tigers of Colorado College rallied back to take the second set by a final score of 25-16. With their backs against the wall, the Green and Gold knew that it was a match deciding set. Belhaven battled back from an early hole in the third srt, but were unable to complete the comeback. The Blazers fell in the third set 25-10 and were defeated by the Colorado College Tigers in straight sets.
Sara Scott, Emily Carroll, and Caitlin Torok each led the team with three kills apiece. Multiple blazers finished the match with a couple of kills and Grace Eidson posted 10 assists in the contest.
Match Two
In the second match of the day, the Blazers took on and beat Howard Payne University in five sets in a non-conference match. A strong opening set put the Green and Gold ahead of the Yellow Jackets 1-0. The Blazers collected 12 kills and earned a.321 hitting percentage in the first set to take the set 25-16.In the second set, Howard Payne edged the Green and Gold to gain the 25-23 set victory to even the score up the score at one apiece.
A back and forth third set came down to the wire, but the Green and Gold came out on top to earn the 2-1 advantage and the 25-22 set victory over the Yellow Jackets. In the fourth set, Belhaven collected 14 kills, but could not come away with the set as the yellow Jackets locked down the fourth set victory to force a match deciding fifth set. The Blazers rallied past Howard Payne to take the set by a score of 15-11 and the match 3-2 to earn their second victory on the season.
Sara Scott led the Blazers with 12 kills, while Izabella Erickson finished the match with 11 kills. Three Blazers had seven kills apiece. Defensively, Kristin Fogan posted 20 digs and Emily Carroll assisted with six blocks.
Grace Laukhuf was named to the 2021 Spike It Up Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Blazers will return to Rugg Arena for a matchup against the Sul Ross State University Lobos on Friday September 17th at 6:00 p.m.
