Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers volleyball team continued their start to the 2021 season competing in the Belhaven/Millsaps Invitational Tournament against Birmingham-Southern College and Huntingdon on Friday. The Blazers split the doubleheader falling to #19 Birmingham-Southern before knocking off Huntingdon.
Match One
In the first match of the day the Blazers squared off against #19 Birmingham-Southern College. The visiting Panthers came out on top in straight sets knocking off the Blazers by set scores of 25-18, 25-12, and 25-16. In the match, the Blazers were led by
Sara Scott who racked up a team-high six kills. Freshman
Ellie Jones followed closely behind with five kills in the match while
Paige Broussard added four kills of her own.
Senior
Grace Eidson continued to provide opportunities for her team and put together a 10 assist performance which led the Belhaven squad.
Grace Laukhuf tallied five assists of her own while also leading the Blazers with nine digs.
For the visitors, Kennedy Dickens posted a 12 kill game to lead all players while also leading the match with four blocks. Ansleigh Dailey picked up 18 assists, a match high, while Kate Powell finished with a match-high 16 digs.
Match Two
Looking to bounce back, the Blazers faced Huntingdon College in the night cap and were able to knock off the Hawks in four sets to pick up their first win of the season. Belhaven took the first set by a score of 25-18 that saw
Sara Scott and
Ellie Jones, both first year players for the Blazers, combine for seven kills.
The visitors bounced back and took a tight second set by a score of 25-23 but Belhaven regained their advantage with a 25-23 set win of their own in the third set. In the decisive set, the Blazers were able to hold off and pull away from the Hawks and secured the match win with a 25-16 set victory.
In the second match of the day the Blazers were led by freshman
Sara Scott who racked up 16 kills, a career high.
Ellie Jones also posted a career high with nine kills while
Callista Moore tacked on eight kills of her own.
Grace Eidson and
Grace Laukhuf both provided plenty of opportunities for their team posting 17 and 16 assists respectively.
Kristin Fogan and
Lilliana Marlowe contributed with strong defensive efforts combining for 32 digs total.
The Blazers will return to action tomorrow as they finish out the Belhaven/Millsaps Invitation Tournament. Belhaven will start tomorrow at home against Centenary College at 12 PM before facing Millsaps on the road at 4 PM.
