JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers picked up their first ASC win of the season on Saturday in a 41-14 rout of the Austin College 'Roos.
The Blazers got off to a fast start on Saturday night driving down the field early in the first half. Deep in Austin College territory,
Mayowa Asagunla hit a wide open
Brooks Brymer in the end zone for the opening score. The touchdown capped off a 70-yard drive across nine plays. Shortly after the Blazers added to their lead when
Constantine Hontzas drilled a 38-yard field goal which put Belhaven up 10-0.
Belhaven tacked on another touchdown early in the second quarter after
TJ Hersey picked off a 'Roos pass and set the Blazers up just outside the redzone.
Kolbe Blunt would carry it in on the next play for Belhaven with a 21-yard rushing score.
Less than five minutes later the Blazers added another score after
Kolbe Blunt returned a punt 55 yards to put Belhaven in the redzone to start the drive. Asagunla punched it in from a yard out for his lone rushing score on the day which put Belhaven up 24-0. Just before the half the visitors would score for the first time on the night after a Belhaven turnover gave the 'Roos strong field position.
Leading 24-7 coming out of the break, Belhaven would add to their lead as they took their first drive of the half 80 yards in just over three minutes and capped it with a touchdown run from
Brad Foley.
Early in the 4th quarter, Hontzas hit his second field goal of the night to give Belhaven the 34-7 advantage. Belhaven picked up their final score of the game when
Lawrence Tyler intercepted a pass from Tyler James and returned it 17 yards for the touchdown. A late score by the visitors was inconsequential to the result and the Blazers walked away with the 41-14 win which moves them to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in ASC play.
On offense the Blazers were led by
Mayowa Asagunla who finished 12-20 on pass attempts for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Asagunla added 40 yards on the ground and picked up a score on seven carries.
Brad Foley led the Belhaven ground attack carrying the ball 19 times for 126 yards and a rushing touchdown. The offense as a whole put up 349 yards total on the day including 213 yards rushing.
Defensively,
Carlton Brown posted a stellar game picking up 3.5 tackles for loss including a pair of sacks.
Demetrius Brokenberry and
Connor Fordham picked up seven total tackles each which led the Blazers while
Isaiah Blackmon had two QB hurries. Belhaven forced two turnovers with
TJ Hersey and
Lawrence Tyler both recording interceptions. As a unit, the defense held Austin College to just 169 yards of offense and an average of just 2.6 yards per play.
The Blazers will look ahead now to their matchup next Saturday against Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas. Kickoff is set for 6 PM against the Bulldogs.
