JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Football team put on a show in an impressive 42-35 road win over Texas Lutheran University on Saturday night, marking the first Blazers win over the Bulldogs in program history.
The Blazers continued their stretch of starting games quickly with the defense forcing a three and out on the Bulldogs first drive. That directly led to a Belhaven score as the Blazers went 84 yards in four minutes and took an early 7-0 lead off the back of a 38-yard touchdown pass from
Mayowa Asagunla to
Michael Simpson. The hosts answered right back to even up the score and kick off what would be a back and forth affair.
Early in the second quarter Asagunla and Simpson would connect against, this time from 15 yards out, to put Belhaven up 14-7 and give the duo their second TD connection of the game. The Bulldogs followed with a pair of 75-yard touchdown drives that put Texas Lutheran on top for the first time 21-14 with less than three minutes left in the half. Belhaven would even the game up though just before the break as Asagunla scrambled on a designed bootleg to get the score back to 21-21.
Coming out of the half, Belhaven picked up an early score and retook the lead thanks to a 55-yard touchdown run from
Kolbe Blunt, his longest carry of the season. Following the nature of the contest, Texas Lutheran answered when Jacob Forton picked up a two-yard TD run that tied the game at 28-28 heading to the final quarter.
In the fourth, the Blazers were able to take a two score lead. On the first play of the quarter Asagunla found
Brooks Brymer in the end zone and the Belhaven tight end held on through a heavy hit to put the Blazers up 35-28. With just under five and a half minutes to go
Brad Foley extended the Blazers lead with a 13-yard touchdown run, his fifth of the season. The hosts would pick up another touchdown but the Blazers held fast and walked away with their first road ASC win on the year.
As an offense, Belhaven put up 530 total yards and averaged over 8.0 yards per play. The Blazers finished with 325 rushing yards and 205 yards passing on the game. Asagunla finished the day 16-20 for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Asagunla hit a new season-high in single-game passing yards against Texas Lutheran and tied his season high in touchdowns.
Michael Simpson led the Blazers' receivers with 69 yards on three catches with two of those going for touchdowns.
Brooks Brymer picked up 44 receiving yards on two catches and a touchdown.
The Blazers had a pair of 100-yard rushers in the game with
Brad Foley leading the way with 123 yards on 19 carries and a score. Asagunla picked up 112 yards on the ground as well on 15 carries and a touchdown.
Kolbe Blunt also had a strong game on the ground with 82 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
On defense, Belhaven was led by
Emmanuel Stanley who finished with 12 tackles, 10 of which were solo efforts.
Rock Schexnaydre picked up a tackle for loss while
Connor Fordham and
Demetrius Brokenberry combined for another tackle for loss. Belhaven held the Bulldogs to just 117 yards through the air and a 50% completion percentage on the game.
The win pushes Belhaven to 3-2 on the season and back to 2-2 in American Southwest Conference play. The Blazers now head into a bye week before returning to the Belhaven Bowl Stadium on October 16th to host Sul Ross State University at 12 PM.
