Belhaven Cruises to 5-0 Win Over Austin College

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Soccer team picked up a midweek victory on Tuesday as they cruised to a 5-0 win over non-conference foe Austin College.

After a tame opening 20 minutes, the Blazers' attack sparked to life producing three goals in a three minute span. Kyla Shaw opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a first time effort from the edge of the box with Lauren Samford picking up her first career assist.

Just one minute later, a long throw-in from Cate West made it past the Austin College backline and Belhaven forward Anna Crane was able to drive into the box and beat the goalkeeper to double the lead for the Blazers. In the 27th minute, Crane picked up her second goal of the game and Belhaven's third overall when she pounced on a bad pass by the 'Roos goalkeeper to make it a 3-0 Blazers' advantage going into the half.

In the second half the Blazers wasted little time adding another tally. In the 51st minute, fullback Alysia Terry was able to send in a low cross to the back post that Lizbeth Eslava confidently put into the net furthering the Belhaven lead.

To finish off the match, Michelle Marquet scored her first goal of the season when she was able to get on the end of a loose ball in the Austin College box and slot it past the goalkeeper for a Blazers' fifth. The five goal output represents the highest scoring match for the Blazers since their 7-0 defeat of Louisiana College in October of 2016.

In the win, Anna Crane picked up her fifth and sixth goals of the season while Kyla Shaw upped her season tally to three. Eslava and Marquet both put themselves on the score sheet for the first time this season.

As a team, Belhaven took 22 total shots with 16 of those shots on target. They have not allowed a goal for three straight matches and are now 5-1 on the season.

The Blazers will look to continue their hot start in their ASC opener against Hardin-Simmons on Thursday. Kick off is set for 5 PM in the Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
