ABILENE, Texas - The Belhaven football team was beaten on Saturday by a final score of 21-16 as they took on #6 Hardin-Simmons in their first road contest of the season.
In the game, the Blazers were able to strike early scoring on just their second drive of the contest after recovering a forced fumble on the hosts opening drive. Belhaven went 70 yards in 10 plays and capped off the drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown from
Brad Foley, his third of the year.Â
The Blazers lead 7-0 after the first quarter and added a field goal to their lead early in the second quarter.
Constantine Hontzas finished off Belhaven's 14Â play, 68 yard drive with a 26-yard field goal, his first career field goal with Belhaven.
Later in the second quarter though Hardin-Simmons would answer back when Kyle Jones found Gatlin Martin for a 57-yard touchdown pass, the longest play of the game. That put the score at 10-7 in favor of the Blazers heading into halftime.Â
To open the second half, Hardin-Simmons embarked on a 69-yard touchdown drive that finished with a seven-yard score from Kolby Youngblood which put the Cowboys on top 14-10. The hosts added to their lead early in the fourth quarter with a 19-yard touchdown pass under 10 seconds into the final frame. Trailing 21-10, Belhaven QB
Mayowa Asagunla punched in a run from eight yards out on the final play of the game which cut the final score down to 21-16 in favor of the #6 Cowboys.Â
For the game, the Blazers out-gained the Cowboys 381 yards to 269 yards with much of the Belhaven attack coming via the ground game. Belhaven rushed for 233 yards on 45 attempts and picked up a couple of rushing scores along the way. The Belhaven defense held Hardin-Simmons to their lowest offensive output of the season.Â
Individually,
Mayowa Asagunla finished the game 12-24 for 148 yards passing and an interception. He also added 59 yards on the ground and picked up his eighth total touchdown of the season.
Kolbe Blunt finished with 101 yards rushing, a new single game career-high for the third year player. Blunt also led the team with four receptions for 40 yards in the game.
Brad Foley added 66 yards on the ground and picked up a touchdown as well.Â
Defensively,
Emmanuel Stanley led the way for Belhaven with six total tackles in the contest including one tackle for loss.
Connor Fordham recorded five tackles in the game and had a pair of tackles for loss which led Belhaven.
Isaiah Blackmon had one of the three sacks recorded by the Blazers in the game as well as creating the forced fumble that led to a Blazers' score in the first quarter.Â
With the loss, the Blazers fall to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in ASC play. They will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Austin College (1-1) inside Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff against the Roos is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
