MARSHALL, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team fell to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Thursday in their first game of the ASC Baseball Championship Tournament. The defeat for the Blazers came 2-1 in 11 innings of play.
In the first postseason game this year for either squad, it was the Tigers who struck first. ETBU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by Jake Miller. Holding onto the one run lead, the two teams would trade scoreless frames with Blazers' starter
Brett Sanchez and Tigers' starter Cole Godkin going head to head in a pitcher's duel.
In the top of the 7th inning the Blazers would level the score. Shortstop
Nick Lucido delivered an RBI single that scored
Evan Moore and got the Blazers on the board. The two starting pitchers would continue to dominate though and the game proceeded to extra innings tied at 1-1.
The Blazers threatened to take the lead in the top of the 10th inning but could not capitalize on a leadoff double by
Nathan Herron. The two teams made it to the 11th inning and a walk-off home run by Chris Shay sealed the win for the Tigers.
On the day,
Brett Sanchez threw 10 innings and allowed just the two earned runs on seven hits while picking up eight strikeouts. Despite the stellar performance Sanchez sees his record fall to 9-2 on the year.Â
Evan Moore was an offensive leader for the Blazers in the game finishing 2-4 at the plate with a double.
Nathan Herron also picked up two hits on the day including a double of his own.Â
With the loss, the Blazers will now square off against Louisiana College in an elimination game on Friday. First pitch in that game is scheduled for 11 AM.
