JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven baseball team finished off their regular season on Saturday, May 1st with a win over the Louisiana College Wildcats. The 6-3 victory for the Blazers also secured a series win for the team to end conference play.
The Blazers wasted no time in the third game of the series and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Nick Lucido drove in
Hunter White on a base hit to right field and then came around to score himself after a sacrifice fly from
Nathan Herron.
With the lead,
Harris Coleman was dominant on the mound in the early going and held the Wildcats hitless until the 4th inning. The Blazers' offense tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning.
Evan Moore reached on a throwing error by the second baseman and the two-bag mistake allowed
Hunter White to score on the play. Then, with a runner on,
Nick Lucido delivered again with a two-run homer to give Belhaven a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 7th inning the Blazers added a single insurance run on a sacrifice fly from
Trip Benson. The Wildcats looked to rally late and put up a three-run inning in the 8th but the starter Coleman was able to slam the door shut for Belhaven.
In the game,
Harris Coleman went the distance on the mound, throwing all nine innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven.
At the plate
Nick Lucido led the way for Belhaven finishing the game 2-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored including his two-run home run.
Hunter White,
Julyan Urena and
Caleb Whittle all recorded two hit games as well to propel the Blazers to the win.
With the win, Belhaven finishes the regular season 20-16 overall and 15-12 in ASC play. The Blazers are qualified for the ASC tournament with seeding and brackets to be determined and announced on Sunday evening.
