Belhaven Falls in Doubleheader to ETBU

JACKSON, Miss. - After knocking off the East Texas Baptist Tigers on Thursday in walkoff fashion, the Belhaven baseball team was beaten in both ends of their Friday doubleheader to close out the series.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the doubleheader the visitors jumped out to an early lead. After their chance to score in the top of the 1st inning came up short, the Tigers struck for a trio of runs in the top of the 2nd inning.

The Blazers' bats struggled against ETBU starter Isaiah Alvarenga and were held scoreless through the first six frames. In the bottom of the 7th inning of what was a seven-inning contest, the Blazers' offense pushed for a late rally.

Trip Benson doubled off the wall in center field and then Nathan Herron followed up with a double of his own. Benson scored on the Herron hit but that would be all the Blazers could muster in the late push as they were beaten 3-1 by ETBU.

Belhaven starter Beau Louviere threw a complete game for the Blazers going all seven innings. He allowed just three runs on five hits while striking out five but takes the loss on the day. As a team the Blazers managed just four hits with the two most impactful being Benson and Herron's in the 7th inning.

GAME TWO

In the final game of the series and second game of the doubleheader the offense heated up for both clubs. The Tigers scored two runs in the 1st inning and a run in the 2nd inning to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 2nd inning Belhaven would score a pair of runs with two outs after Reed Bolton hit a triple off the left field wall. Bolton scored on the same play after a throwing error by the ETBU cutoff man.

The Tigers would get a run back in the 3rd inning though and then exploded for seven runs in the top of the 4th inning to open up an 11-2 lead on the Blazers. Belhaven worked to try and fight back into the contest. Kyle McLaughlin delivered a bases-clearing double in the home half of the 4th inning which scored three runs and cut the deficit to 11-5 in favor of the visitors.

Belhaven followed that up with a pair of runs in the 5th inning after Trip Benson and Nathan Herron scored via a Caleb Whittle triple. With the gap cut to four though ETBU was able to score a run in each of the next three innings and led 14-7 heading to the final frame. Hunter White belted a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th inning but Belhaven could not rally past that and were beaten 14-8 in the game.

Reliever Jacob Doyle delivered a strong appearance in relief for Belhaven throwing three innings in the game. He allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out a pair in just his third appearance of the season.

Kyle McLaughlin finished the game 2-4 with 3 RBIs while Reed Bolton picked up a pair of hits with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

With the losses the Blazers fall to 18-15 on the season and 13-11 in conference play.

They will look to bounce back next weekend when they host Louisiana College in the final series of the regular season. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 PM.
