Belhaven Splits Saturday Doubleheader at LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team split their Saturday doubleheader at LeTourneau University taking the first game 3-0, but dropping the backend of the back to back, 12-2.

GAME ONE

In the first game of the two game set, the Blazers got off to a strong start to the series with a shutout win over the YellowJackets. Belhaven took the lead in the third inning when Hunter White worked a walk with bases loaded and scored Evan Moore from third base.

The Blazers would tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning when Caleb Whittle delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Reed Bolton and Nathan Herron. The three runs would prove to be more than enough for the Blazers in the seven inning contest as starting pitcher Brett Sanchez delivered a complete game shutout.

Leading the way in the first game, Caleb Whittle finished 1-3 with an RBI at the plate while Brett Sanchez threw seven scoreless innings. The Blazers' starter allowed just four hits and struck out six on his way to his ninth win of the season.

GAME TWO

In the second game, the hosts were able to up their offensive production and knocked off the Blazers by a 12-2 final score.

Belhaven struck first in the second contest when Kyle McLaughlin worked a first inning walk with bases loaded. In the bottom of the first though LeTourneau would respond with a trio of runs and took a 3-1 lead after the first frame.

In the fifth the hosts would stretch their lead with a five-run frame and take an 8-1 advantage over the Blazers. LeTourneau tacked on two more in the sixth and two in the seventh despite the Blazers picking up a late run.

Nick Lucido led the Blazers in game two with a 3-4 game at the plate including a double and an RBI. In relief, Jacob Doyle pitched a scoreless inning.

The two ASC foes will square off Sunday, April 18th for a series rubber match. First pitch in the contest is set for 1 PM.
