JACKSON, Miss. - The Blazers' football team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday knocking off Louisiana College in a 33-24 thriller that saw Belhaven score twice in the final 30 seconds to come from behind for the victory.
Belhaven jumped out to an early lead in the ASC matchup when
Brad Foley capped off a nine play, 78 yard drive just four minutes in with a touchdown rush from five yards out. Early in the second quarter, Blazers QB
Mayowa Asagunla found
Michael Simpson for a 65-yard completion that took Belhaven down inside the Wildcats two-yard line. Asagunla punched it in on the second attempt and extended the Blazers lead to 13-0 with under 13 minutes to go in the first half.
Later in the half, the Wildcats would get on the board after a Belhaven punt and penalty gave the visitors starting field position on the Blazers' side of the field. The Louisiana College drive stalled out inside the Blazers five-yard line and the Wildcats settled for a field goal cutting the score to a 13-3 Blazers' lead.
Belhaven started with the ball to open up the second half and the teams traded possession on short drives until
Brad Foley broke off a 60-yard run for the Blazers and took the ball inside the LC one-yard line. Once again, Asagunla was able to punch it in from the one-yard line and the Blazers saw their lead extended to 20-3 after
Daniel Croskrey converted the extra point.
The visitors put together a strong comeback in the final quarter started off on an eight-play, 51 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown. After a blocked extra point by
TJ Hersey, Belhaven maintained a 20-9 lead. After a three and out by the Blazers' offense, the Wildcats added another touchdown on a 60-yard pass to Micah Dunn and added a two-point conversion to cut the Blazers lead to three.
With 5:14 on the clock, Louisiana College took over on the Belhaven 46-yard line and on 3rd and 15, hit Canaan Leon for a 23-yard score the give the Wildcats their first lead, 24-20.
The Blazers took possession on their own 25-yard line, trailing by four, with 4:01 on the clock. Asagunla completed four straight passes to four different receivers as the Blazers looked for the come from behind win. Belhaven worked the ball to the Wildcats' 31-yard line but a holding call pushed the Blazers into a 2nd and 20 with 30 seconds to play.
Ben Owens entered the game at QB due to injury and on 3rd and 20, hit
Brad Foley on a 41-yard touchdown pass giving Belhaven a 27-24 lead with 23 seconds left.
With less than 10 seconds to go,
Phazion Locke sealed the win for Belhaven with an interception returned 45 yards for a touchdown, icing a 33-24 Blazers' win.
In the game, Belhaven posted 453 yards of offense, 255 of which came through the run game.
Brad Foley led the Blazers on the ground with 181 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown while adding two receptions for 52 yards and a score.
Mayowa Asagunla tacked on two rushing scores of his own on nine attempts.
Asagunla finished 14-25 through the air with 157 passing yards while
Ben Owens went 1-3 in his limited chances but tacked on the game-winning 41-yard touchdown pass.
The Blazers' defense limited the Wildcats to just 268 total yards and only 54 yards rushing. Corey Tolliver led all players with seven tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss. As a unit, the defense had six players contribute tackles for loss.
Justin Percy led Belhaven with three pass break ups on the game and
Phazion Locke secured the lone forced turnover on his game-sealing pick six with seconds left.
With the win, Belhaven improves to 1-2 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 1-1 on the year. The Blazers return to action in two weeks time when they head to Georgetown, Texas to face Southwestern University. Kickoff against the Pirates is set for 1 PM on March 20th.
